Word of mouth marketing is your business’s best friend

It’s the holy grail of acquiring new business. The great thing about it? It doesn’t need to be an in-person recommendation to be effective.

Facebook is like word of mouth marketing on steroids

The wonderful thing about online reviews, as opposed to an in-person recommendation, is that the whole entire world can see them! Publishing a review on Facebook is like giving a personal recommendation to all of your friends on Facebook! And it’s not a one-time thing either, once you publish a review, it’s there to stay. So what does all this mean?

You need more reviews online

Ask your customers to leave you a review – offer them a reward if they do such as a free voucher or giftcard. Another thing you can do to get more reviews is raffling off a prize or hosting a giveaway of some sort. Especially if your business has a large volume of customers (like a coffeehouse, restaurant, or dentist) you can raffle off a prize to everyone who leaves your business a review on Facebook. Those are great ways to get reviews on your Facebook page from recent customers but don’t forget about your past customers.

Keep in touch with your customers

Don’t forget about your customers after they’ve left! There’s a good chance they might need your product or service again – so stay in their good graces and keep in contact with them. After all, it’s much more expensive to acquire a new customer than it is to continue to do business with existing/previous customers. If you keep in touch with your customer base regularly and continue to give them value (think Educate, Entertain, and Engage!) then they’ll be much more likely to refer their friends and family to you! Build that relationship with your customers and earn their trust by giving them value – then once in awhile when you ask for them to refer you to their friends and family, they’ll be much more receptive and likely to do so. Build more quality relationships with your customers and your word of mouth marketing will snowball.

Just having more reviews isn’t enough – you need people to actually see them.

Not only do you need more reviews, you need to make sure people are seeing those reviews! Share them on your Facebook page and tag the person who left the review in the post – thanking them for the wonderful review they left you. You could even give them a giftcard or some kind of reward to show your appreciation. I talk a lot about the 3 E’s (Entertain, Educate, and Engage) and focusing on these things to get the most bang for your buck out of Facebook and other social media platforms; and replying to all your reviews is a great way to stay engaged with your customers. People may forget what you did, but they’ll never forget how you made them feel – so make them feel good by showing your appreciation! If you can do that, then you’ll have more people talking about you and promoting your business to their friends – word of mouth marketing at it’s finest.
